Girls Engineering the Future’

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) South Africa

How exciting it is to realize that the government has special concern for the education of girl children? Many girls end up not meeting their dreams of becoming useful in society because they might have been told they cannot make it because they are girls, WHAT A MYTH! or because there was no one to give them a push. On the other hand, they might have been given the impression that certain subject are meant for boys and so they lost interest of even attempting them such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

October 2013 opened a new door for two-year educational project called ‘Girls Engineering the Future’. The government intends to fund this program for two years while using cross-curricular teaching and learning to engage Grade 10 learners. The motive is to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects to steer the desire of leaners into engineering apprenticeships. The government is planning to have an intake of 800 girls from 16 schools across the country taking part in an introductory STEM Day within their schools for the first year and to double the number in the second year.

The scarcity of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths personnel and the limited number of girls in these fields have been a concern to the government in recent years. I personally love this initiative. AWESOME!

  • How are these learners going to deal with their myth?
·         Is the government going to meet its goals?

·         Will the female learners fine this project interesting?

·         If Yes. Are they willing to cooperate with the government so that they can engineer the future?
